Blues aiming to break JJB Stadium hoodoo

City fans will travel to the JJB Stadium hoping to see their side break their duck at Wigan’s home ground.

The Blues are set to be backed by over 4,000 supporters, but City’s record after making this short journey is one that Mark Hughes will want to improve.

Our first league visit to the JJB, on Boxing Day 2005, began well and in surreal circumstances. Many of those making up what was a record attendance at the JJB were in fancy dress, as is the local custom, but within a minute Antoine Sibierski had put City in the lead. Sadly, the home side found their feet quickly, going into a 3-1 lead by half-time. They added another with 19 minutes left, then goals from Andy Cole and Joey Barton added to the excitement but City left empty handed.

Injuries and suspensions the following October led to Matt Mills and Michael Johnson making their first-team debuts, and Wigan put four past City once again – this time without reply on a bad day at the office for City.

Last season’s trip up the M61 saw another early goal, with Geovanni pouncing on a Titus Bramble howler to put us ahead in the first minute. Not the greatest of starts for Steve Bruce’s return to the ‘Latics, but to his and Wigan’s credit they rallied strongly, with Paul Scharner’s first half goal restoring parity. The only other moment of note was Mario Melchiot’s dismissal late on for a two-footed lunge on Stephen Ireland – something that happened to the Irishman a week later at White Hart Lane.

So we may not have had the right result as yet at the JJB, but there’s usually something to remember – and tickets are still on sale at the City of Manchester Stadium box office until 5.30pm on Saturday.

Don’t forget you can hear live commentary on the entire game via MCFCTV.com, starting just before 4.00pm on Sunday.
