Opponents targeted Elano for the latter part of last season after the mercurial Brazilian’s talents slipped under the radar earlier on, and Jo also received closer attention against Brighton on Wednesday than against Portsmouth last weekend.
Robinho is also now set to rejoin his fellow countrymen at the JJB Stadium and is now well known after his fine start for City, but Hughes thinks the likely nature of the game will not be a problem.
He says, “If players have not experienced away games against physical sides, it can be an eye-opener for them. But, we are talking about top-quality players here. Robinho has played in huge matches all over the world in very intimidating atmospheres, and I don't think a great deal fazes him. He takes it all in his stride, he has great belief in the amount of belief that he has, and rightly so. He understand that against anyone, he can have an effect.”
Taking a wider look at Wigan, Hughes adds:
“If you look at their performances they are a touch unfortunate to have the points they have, you could argue that they should have had more.
“We're under no illusions, they are a big, strong and powerful side. The centre forward Zaki has come in and looks like a good foil for Emile Heskey, who has always given my teams in the past a bit of trouble. I have a healthy respect for the way they are playing at the moment, and it will be a test for us.
“We'll be near enough at full strength, and we'll look to build on the performance we were able to produce against Portsmouth - and put aside the one we produced against Brighton.”
Of his opposite number at the JJB, alongside whom he played at Old Trafford for many years, Hughes says:
“He's coached and managed at different levels and achieved promotion on several occasions, and I have the greatest respect for what he has done. It's always a big challenge going up against Steve.”
