Ireland wants to get back on track

Stephen Ireland has called on his City team mates to put the disappointment of Wednesday's Carling Cup exit firmly behind them at the JJB Stadium today.

It's only a week since the Blues put six past David James, and it was a day where Stephen was in the kind of form that led him to be named as City's player of the month on Friday.

The 22-year-old is well aware of the scrutiny the Club is under, but he insists that heads have not dropped despite the penalty defeat at the Withdean Stadium.

Stephen says, "All eyes are on us because of the publicity around the Club, but the team knows what to do. We’ve got to be consistent, we have to work hard and we have to take off like we did against Portsmouth - and that starts on Sunday.

"It's so important to get back on track. We've got to win the game and win the game well, our morale is really good even if what happened at Brighton was a bit of a setback. Everyone is looking forward to Sunday to make it right.

"In football you always get that chance to make it right, and I think we'll knuckle down to get that done."

City have yet to record a win at the JJB Stadium, and Stephen has painful memories of our game there last season, when a two-footed challenge on him by Mario Melchiot saw the Wigan player get sent off.

"Our history there has not been great," Stephen continues, "but we don't look at the history books. If you look at how we can play, like we did against Portsmouth, it's difficult to stop us on our day. I don't think that was a fluke, I think there is a lot more to come."

Stephen looks to have added a muscular edge to his game this season, and he sees City's improved fitness as key to the good start to the season.

"If you compare us to other teams on work-rate, no-one works harder than us and no-one has out run us this season. We’ll always work hard, regardless of our formation, if we are attacking we'll always get ourselves back into the game to defend. We knuckle down as a unit, because we are really coming together as unit, both in attack and defence," he concludes.
