The midfielder played 102 minutes of the match, which was his first since the win over Sunderland just over three weeks ago. A groin injury kept him off England Under 21 duty and City's subsequent games, but the Manager was pleased with what he saw from the 20-year-old.
He says, "The injury has been hampering him, but he needs to train and play if he can. It’s an issue that we need to get on top of, but he will be better for the game on Wednesday. There’ll be discomfort but the question is whether it’s manageable. He looked mobile, he was involved in the game and did OK in the circumstances."
Elsewhere, Hughes is convinced that he has found out more about his players even despite the nature of Wednesday night's shock defeat to Brighton at the Withdean Stadium.
"In defeat you learn more than when you win," he adds, "so we’ll take it all on board and look at what positives there were. I thought that Pablo Zabaleta outstanding again and really tried to force the issue with the manner of his performance. We needed a few more performances like his to win.
"It was important to give some of the guys game time, but I picked a team that was strong enough to win at Brighton, but it was not to be.”
