Secretary of State launches new CITC initiative

Business Secretary John Hutton visited the City of Manchester Stadium this week to help launch City in the Community’s latest schools initiative.

The Enterprise Academy project, which is backed by the Premier League, the North West Development Agency and the Department for Business, will see CITC work with young people across Manchester and Tameside to give them a better understanding of business by allowing them a unique insight into the running of a professional football club.

Among the things that students will learn about are marketing, customer services, career planning and the Club’s community initiatives.

At the launch the Secretary of State met young people from Two Trees Sports College in Denton and joined staff members from the football club in helping to judge some of the pupils work.

Mr Hutton said: “Manchester City’s scheme will have a tremendous impact on the local community and will provide a range of exciting opportunities to help develop the next generation of entrepreneurs.

“I want to thank the Premier League and Manchester City for their enthusiastic support in helping young people acquire the skills and confidence they need to turn their business dreams into reality.”

City in the Community will initially work with three high schools in Tameside before the project is rolled out into Manchester after Christmas.

Young people who take part in the scheme will get to visit the City of Manchester Stadium and get the chance to earn free tickets to MCFC home games.

Manchester City’s Executive Chairman, Garry Cook said: “Manchester City through its charity, City in the Community, is delighted to be involved in this new scheme.

“Not only will it build on the already excellent education work done by CITC, it will help to give young people in Manchester and Tameside an understanding of Manchester City as a business rather than just a football club and hopefully help them to enjoy learning about enterprise along the way.”
