Stephen Ireland wins Thomas Cook award

Stephen Ireland’s sublime early-season form has been rewarded with his winning the first Manchester City Thomas Cook Player of the Month award for 2008/09.

The 22-year-old has established himself in Mark Hughes’ side with nine appearances and two goals this season, most recently the equaliser deep into extra time in the Carling Cup tie against Brighton. But it has been Stephen’s increasingly influential performances across the midfield that have really caught the eye, the Academy graduate having perfectly complimented recent big-money purchases like Robinho and Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Midfielder Adam Clayton takes the award for the reserve player of the month, while Andrew Tutte gets the nod from the Academy, whose Under 18 side have banged in 24 goals in five unbeaten games so far.
