The visitors won it 1-0 with a goal on the hour from striker Chris Blakeley after he broke the offside trap before firing high beyond City keeper James Wood.
The Blues had made the better of the early exchanges with two chances in the first two minutes and Rochdale were dazed after midfielder Andrew Mitchell, City's best performer on the day, rattled the crossbar with a shot from 25-yards.
Dale came into it midway through the half but should have gone in at the break behind as Omar Elabdellaoui blazed over when well placed inside the box.
Rochdale were the better team in the second 45 and could have added to Blakeley's strike but it mattered not as they made the short journey home with all three points.
