Hart won't rest on his laurels

Joe Hart is taking nothing for granted despite putting pen to paper on his new, five-year contract with City.

The 21-year-old’s new deal could be seen as the culmination of an excellent spell for him since his arrival at the Club from Shrewsbury in May 2006. Since then he has established himself as an England Under 21 international, made his full England debut and established himself as City’s number one – but he does not intend to rest on his laurels.

Joe says, “It’s been in the pipeline for a while but with everything going on behind the scenes it took a while to get everybody sat down. Everything is steady at the club now and I am happy with everything, I am delighted to sign.

“My contract was up at the end of next year and obviously I was thinking about it, I’m delighted to sign a long contract with the club, it’s what I always wanted to do. From when I came here I wanted to play, I achieved that and now hopefully I will be here for years.

“I won’t take anything for granted, I know full well that I don’t know what’s around the corner, but in a positive way with the finance that’s now available. I want to keep my side of the bargain, keep playing well and keep my place in the team.”

The new contract and the win over Stoke that moved City into eighth in the Barclays Premier League table made it a fine weekend for Joe, and looking at 3-0 victory he said:

“We know that if we keep clean sheets we should win with what’s going on at the other end. We’ve not done it recently, but we did against Stoke and got the result.

“We’ve got a nice balance, there are great attackers but we have always had a good defence. We still have that , but now we have it at the other end so it balances out. We’ll keep it learning about each other and it will come good.”
