Hughes wary of Newcastle threat

Mark Hughes is warning his City side that Joe Kinnear's Newcastle will be a tough proposition despite their lowly league position.

The former Wimbledon boss looks to have instilled a new resilience into the Magpies since starting as interim manager at St James Park last month, with his side fighting back from two goals down to earn a point at Goodison Park a fortnight ago.

That game was preceded by the now-infamous rant at the written press from Kinnear, something which Hughes thinks was a catalyst for Newcastle to look to move away from the wrong end of the table.

Mark says, “Looking from the outside, it seems as though he needed to get something off his chest. It appears to have galvanised the team and the club.

“Everyone seems to be pulling closer together. They had a decent result against Everton, so he got the reaction he wanted.

“Joe has been a football man for many years. He understands how the game works and maybe he is using every dark art he can find out there to make sure the club is successful. Every manager looks to do that.”

“Joe’s teams had a certain style of play you had to combat. You had to stand up to the fight. I think what he is trying to do now is instil a little bit more confidence into a very good group of players.”

Goals have not been difficult to come by for City so far this season, with 14 different players getting on the score sheet. That it's not just the strikers who have been chipping in is something that's pleased Hughes, who is still without the services of three front men in Bojinov, Vassell and Benjani.

Mark adds, "Getting goals from throughout your team is really important. You can't just hang your hat on one or two players scoring the goals that are going to take you to where you want to go. You have to have a spread of goals from everyone.

"On a few occasions the strikers have been well marshalled and stopped from performing as they would like, so that means that other players have to come to the fore and take on the goalscoring mantle."
