International call-up news

15 members of City’s first team squad have received their call-up papers for the forthcoming round of international matches.

As announced on Sunday, Shaun Wright-Phillips is back in the England squad for the game against Kazakhstan at Wembley, October 11th k/o 5.15pm, and Belarus in Minsk, October 15th k/o 7.30pm (UK time). England’s Under 21 side face Wales in a ‘battle of Britain’ play-off for next summer’s European Championships, with Joe Hart and Micah Richards both getting the call from former City boss Stuart Pearce. The pair are almost certain to be involved in both legs, at Ninian Park on October 10th and Villa Park on October 14th.

However Ched Evans won’t be involved in the two-legged play-off, the young striker is now a regular pick for John Toshack’s senior squad and he has been called up for the home game against Liechtenstein and the tough trip to Germany four days later.

Blues skipper Richard Dunne will face Cypriot opposition for the second time within a couple of weeks when Ireland take on Cyprus at Croke Park on October 15th. Tal Ben-Haim faces two away trips with Israel, who play Luxembourg and then Latvia. Gelson Fernandes and Switzerland are in the same group as Israel, they face Latvia at home first followed by a trip to Piraeus to play Greece.

Vincent Kompany will be in Brussels for both of Belgium’s 2010 qualifiers, against Estonia and Spain. Martin Petrov, over his recent hamstring injury, is in Bulgaria’s squad for their home game against Italy and the away trip to Tbilisi to play Georgia. Kasper Schmeichel and Denmark are also in a two-legged Euro 2009 U21 play-off, against Serbia.

City’s South American quintet face the familiar long-haul flights for a series of World Cup games. Felipe Caicedo is in the Ecuadorian squad for their games against Chile in Quito, and Venezuela in Puerto la Cruz. Pablo Zabaleta could also face Chile when Argentina play in Santiago on October 15th, but before that comes the ‘local derby’ with Uruguay in Buenos Aires. Elano, Jo and Robinho will be in San Cristobel to play Venezuela before going back to Brazil to play Colombia in Rio.

Looking outside the senior squad, Academy starlet Vladimir Weiss is in Slovakia’s Under 20 squad for the Mirop Cup tournament, while Ryan McGivern and Chris Ramsey face a trio of U19 internationals – although McGivern is also on standby for the senior Northern Ireland squad.
