Johnson aiming for swift return

City midfielder Michael Johnson has been speaking exclusively to MCFCTV.com about his on-going injury problems that have seen him miss six games already this season.

Of his latest spell on the sidelines the England U21 international said: “I felt it coming on and it's a reoccurrence of injury which kept me out for quite a big part of last season.

“It’s to do with my groins and I felt it in the Midtjylland away game – that was a long game.

“I could feel it a bit before the match but I tried to play through it. It got worse and then we tried to cure it before the Sunderland game, but that was only a few days later.

“In the second half of that it went past the point where it was too sore. Probably in hindsight it would be best to have had the rest but you live and learn.”

And after playing over 100 minutes against Brighton in the Carling Cup last month, the 20-year-old has been training with the intention of being able to make a more sustained come back in the near future.

“I’ve been running and I’ve come through that without much of a problem so hopefully I’ll be back anytime after this international break,” Johnson added.

“The most important thing now is to stay injury-free because of all the things that are happening with the Club, if you’re not going to be playing and fit, then they’re going to look somewhere else for someone who can do it.”

And with the competition for midfield places getting tougher all the while, Johnson admitted, “It’s exciting times” at the Club.

As new summer arrivals have raised the competition level amongst Mark Hughes’ squad, Michael has been impressed with what he’s seen, pointing to: “The skills, footballing ability and the work rate,” of his new team mates.

He continued: “Some people might not think of Robinho working hard, but he puts great effort in on the pitch, like the rest of us. That’s what you need to have a good team.”

But not all of the summer recruits are new to Johnson, fellow Academy graduate Shaun Wright-Phillips returned home and has since earned a recall to the England squad after some fine performances in a City shirt.

Asked about SWP’s current form, Michael said: “He’s always had the ability and at Chelsea it was stop-start.

“You need to have a run in the team, like he’s doing here, to keep your confidence up and keep developing. That’s what he’s got here and look at him.”

As for himself though, his targets for this season remain clear: “Just to get fit at the minute!

“If I get fit and back into this team then hopefully I can have a good season, push on from last year and go for a higher placed finish.”
