City will hope to be well on the way to qualification before the trip to Spain as for Racing, for whom this is their first foray into European competition, they travel to PSG and FC Twente as well as hosting top seeds FC Schalke.
Racing made it in to the competition after a fine season for themselves in La Liga, where they finished in sixth place last year, ahead of teams such as Valencia, Deportivo La Coruna and 2007 UEFA Cup finalists Espanyol.
Founded in 1913, the Verdiblancos have spent a large part of their existence in the Segunda Division, but have been back in the top flight since the 2002/03 season. Their best ever campaign saw them finish second back in the 1930/31 season and European qualification this year represents a huge feat for the club who are more used to finishing in the lower reaches of La Liga.
Indeed, despite only being six games into this season, Santander lie 14th in the table but have an impressive 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp against Barcelona to their credit. The northern Spanish side’s passage into the group stages was secured with a couple of low key 1-0 victories over Finnish side FC Honka Espoo in the First Round proper.
Racing will host City at their Campos de Sport de El Sardinero stadium, which holds just over 22,000 (all seated) and was built in 1988.
The December meeting will be the first ever game between the two teams.
