Although they weren’t directly involved in the 8-1 drubbing Middlesbrough handed out on the pitch both were fully aware of the impact the result had in what ultimately proved to be the last Barclays Premier League game for a few players and staff involved that day.
Looking back on that bizarre May day, Joe Hart recalled: “I was on the bench for that game, it was Andreas’ leaving present and if it had not been for him it could have been a lot worse.
“We know that we were dreadful that day, we maybe got away with it being the end of the season, but we know it won’t be like that now and we want to put it right."
Manager Mark Hughes was also on the wrong end of heavy defeat that day with his previous club, but was still aware of what had happened at the Riverside.
He said: “Obviously I wasn't here, but it is recent enough to be in the mind of some players but they have the opportunity to wipe that memory away and move on.
“I was beaten 4-1 on that day [by Birmingham], when that result came in it was picked up by everybody. This is a chance to address that and I hope we will be a lot better this time out.”
And City’s number one Hart agreed: “It’s a long way for people to travel and we had great support that day, and we were a shamble.
“We know we are not going to do that again, we’ll be a lot better. There was great support for us at Newcastle and hopefully they will travel back to the north east again for the Boro game.”
