Boss looking at all defensive choices

Facing the media ahead of Sunday’s trip to Bolton, Mark Hughes has again answered questions today about City’s defensive unit and the use of Micah Richards at the left back during the 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough this week.

Hughes was quick to stress that despite using Richards in the usual role on Wednesday it wasn’t due to anything Javi Garrido had done wrong.

“No, I just think Javier is an attack-minded left back and away from home our positive play had left us a bit open,” Hughes confirmed.

“It wasn’t a reflection on how Javi had been playing because he did well in the previous game. It was just something I needed to look at and it could very well be another option for us in the future.

"We would all acknowledge Micah is an outstanding young defender, but it is not about individuals. It is about a collective.

And with regard to Michael Ball who hasn’t featured over recent weeks, the Manager said: “Michael’s still injured and isn’t ready. He joined in a session on Monday and Tuesday and doing extra work to try and get back into contention but he’s not fit yet.”

Hughes, who can call on Pablo Zabaleta again this weekend following his three-game suspension, added: “With a lot of our defenders this season, the chopping and changing has not helped.

"If you look at the teams with a good defensive record, more often than not it is because they have a settled back four.

"It does have a bearing because it has an effect on your defensive work. Defenders are like attackers, they get into a rhythm of play and develop an understanding with the people around them."
