Boss wary of 'wounded animal'

Mark Hughes has admitted he knows exactly what to expect from Bolton Wanderers today as Gary Megson's men look to pull themselves off the bottom of the Barclays Premier League.

Tottenham's late show against Liverpool yesterday saw the Trotters replace them at the foot of the table and Hughes is fully prepared for this afternoon's test.

He said: "There are big tests every time you go up against a Premier League side. We know that a wounded animal is quite dangerous and have just have to make sure that on the day we’re good enough to overcome the qualities they have.

"We know what to expect, there’s no surprises from our point of view, they’re not going to come up with anything we don’t know already about. We just need to answer the questions that they’ll ask of us and make sure we ask questions of them.

"There’s a different test any time you go away against different opposition. Some will have a different game plan and Bolton’s over the years has been to get the ball in key areas of the field, try and keep it there and create chances as a consequence of keeping the ball alive in there."

And one of Bolton's key figures in their relative successes over the last few years has been Kevin Davies and the City boss is well aware of the threat the big striker carries.

Hughes added: "He’s great for, if I can say, nuisance value because he invariably gets his head on the end of things. He’s got a good work ethic as well, which runs right through Bolton’s team, they do work exceptionally hard for each other.

"You have to really compete and try to stop them getting flick ons in your box because they do play a lot on that part of the game. If you can compete well, dominate them and restrict them to very few opportunities to cause mayhem in your box, then it’s going to be to your benefit."
