The two clubs met in the semi-finals of the European Cup Winner's Cup in April 1970, when a 1-0 lead for the German side was overturned in a 5-1 rout at Maine Road two weeks later (Tommy Booth is pictured, left, in the first leg).
The goalscorers that night were Neil Young (with two), Colin Bell, Francis Lee and Mike Doyle, and Executive Chairman Garry Cook has told us that the players who featured in both legs are set to travel to Gelsenkirchen to watch our UEFA Cup group game in a fortnight's time.
Garry said, "Both the Chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, and I are of the age group where we respect and honour anybody who has played at the highest level, and none so more than here. There are some great names that have come through, and continue to come through, this club. Mike Summerbee has rounded up the gang of heroes from 1970 and they will be joining me at the Schalke match. It’s a great way to stay connected to the people who made this club what it is today."
The Chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, has already seen how the Club respects its past with the 'My First City Game' campaign which kicked off this week, and he adds:
"We are committing to the history and heritage of this club, because they are such an important part of this club. What we do in the future has to be constructive, but it always has to pay its respects to the history of the club. Anything we can do involving the fans, the players and the community is very important."
The team for the game in 1970 was Corrigan, Book, Pardoe, Doyle, Jeffries, Oakes, Booth, Bell, Lee, Young, Summerbee – Tony Towers replaced Derek Jeffries for the second leg.
