Didi staying positive

Didi Hamann is calling on his City team mates to dig deep after the disappointment of Sunday's defeat to Spurs.

The German midfielder was speaking in the wake of an incident-packed game in which the Blues had Gelson Fernandes & Richard Dunne sent off after taking an early lead through Robinho.

The dismissal of Fernandes was followed quickly by the first of Darren Bent's two goals that saw the three points heading to White Hart Lane, and although Benoit Assou-Ekotto also saw red for Spurs late on, City could not quite claw back themselves into the match.

Hamann, who replaced Darius Vassell after City had been reduced to 10 men, does not think City were outplayed after going a man down and he told us:

"Obviously we’re disappointed. Being 1-0 up, but having Gelson sent off and then conceding a goal was a bit of a blow, a real double-whammy. In the second half, I thought we controlled them pretty well, they had a lot of possession but we had the better chances – they scored out of the blue.

"We had to push forward after that in the last 25 minutes, but if things are really not going your way it’s going to be hard to get an equaliser.

"Gelson's sending off was a bit hard, his first challenge was probably a booking and the second on its own was probably a booking as well, but to get two yellow cards for two fouls inside 25 minutes is harsh. Maybe the referee could have had a word with him after the second to tell him to calm down. It’s harsh, but maybe both were bookable offences.

"With Dunnie’s it looks like he was the last man so you can’t really argue with that either."

So does Didi think City were a touch hard done by?

"If you look at the game overall then yes, after the break they had a lot of possession but they did not threaten us too much apart from getting that second goal. We could have been 2-1 up by then, and we could have equalised afterwards. We were down to 10 men for more than 60 minutes, so it was never going to be easy but I think we should have got something out of the game.

"Maybe we should have been more positive at the start of the second half as they did not want to over commit, we were pretty comfortable and did not look in trouble until the second goal. We kept pushing forwards afterwards, had a couple of chances but could not take them.

"When things are not going your way, like they have not done in the last few weeks, then these things will happen. But we had to keep our heads up and we matched them for most of the game, even with a man down, so we have to keep working and try as hard as we did against Spurs, especially in the second half. If we do that then the results will improve."
