Dunnie's back to his best

Mark Hughes has picked three players out for praise as he puts the final touches together for Sunday's mouth-watering Manchester derby.

Blues skipper Richard Dunne has been at the heart of a fine week for the side, with two wins and no goals conceded, and his manager has seen an improvement in his form that will be vital when facing the Barclays Premier League champions on Sunday.

Mark says, "I have to say Richard Dunne has been absolutely exceptional in the last two games. I think he’s back to his best and that shows strength of character. Along with others he’s struggled for a bit of form but he’s been a shining light and led by example during the last two games.

"We’ll need more of that at the weekend and for the rest of the season to follow. We’re in decent shape and the moment so if we’re strong and keep together, which I full anticipate we will, United will have a difficult game and other teams will."

It has also been a good week for Daniel Sturridge, the young striker following up his penalty against Arsenal with an acclaimed performance out on the left flank against Schalke on Thursday night, where he set up City's opening goal.

On Daniel the Manager adds: "He did really well and I was very pleased. He had a role to fulfil and he did exceptionally well. In an attacking sense we know the qualities that he has but defensively there was a part to play and he was able to do that. It is something not normally associated with his game, and he did it very well. So for a young player to take that on board quickly was very pleasing and he was a big part of the performance."

The other player to get the thumbs-up is Stephen Ireland, whose current run if fine form has seen him score in each of the last three games.

"I think he’s a guy that sat himself down in the summer and said, ‘Where’s my career going and what can I do to get better and make sure I stay at Manchester City?’ That’s all he’s done and he’s worked extremely hard on his own in the summer break, and came back really strong, really fit. We’ve added to that and as a consequence he’s playing the best football of his career, in my opinion," Mark adds.

"He is very much a huge part of we’re trying to do here, he is embracing everything that we’re trying to introduce and we’re reaping the benefits. He’s had an outstanding start to the season, and given the way he approaches his work with the work ethic he has then there’s no reason why he can’t sustain that for the whole season."
