Fernandes injury confirmed ahead of UEFA Cup tie

Initial injury fears over Gelson Fernandes have been confirmed today as the Swiss midfielder now looks set to be out for up to three weeks with a pulled hamstring.

Mark Hughes noted with caution during last week’s pre-Arsenal press conference that the former FC Sion player had been withdrawn during Switzerland’s friendly with Finland with a suspected injury.

And as well as being without the 22-year-old for the trip to Germany, Robinho and Pablo Zabaleta are doubts for Thursday’s UEFA Cup clash with FC Schalke, both face late fitness tests today.

The Manager told us: “The medical staff will have to have another look at Robinho again.

“If his ankle is still as sore as it was yesterday he definitely won’t travel. His ankle is swollen after he twisted it during the Arsenal game on Saturday.

“Zabaleta has a sore thigh. He didn’t train yesterday and they are not yet sure if he will make it in time. He is another that they will need to have to look at in the morning.”

Better news for the Blues is that Joe Hart has been passed fully fit having surprisingly took his place in goal last weekend.

Also, Brazilian striker Jo is fit after picking up a slight knock in action for the reserves last week and should travel with the rest of the squad to Gelsenkirchen.
