Hughes looking forward to an 'exciting week'

Mark Hughes has given us his thoughts ahead of a big week for his side, with the Blues taking on Arsenal and FC Schalke 04, before rounding the week off with the small matter of a Manchester derby next Sunday.

Speaking to the media ahead of the first big clash of a busy week, against Arsenal, the Manager declared: “We’re looking forward to it.

“The motivation for these type of games is easy because you look at the quality of the opposition and it’s all there.

“As a professional footballer and manager you want to pit yourself against the best and that’s what we will be doing in the coming week.

“In between two great games in the Premier League we have a good game away in Europe as well, in front of a full house at a fantastic stadium, so it’s an exciting week for everyone.”

And the first instalment tomorrow at the City of Manchester Stadium could well be the most exciting with two teams keen to play fast, attacking football, although as it was mentioned City may need to score three goals to win the game in the current climate.

“That’s how it’s panning out,” Hughes replied with a wry smile. “The goals have come reasonably easily because of our attacking threat and attacking play.

“Our strikers in fairness haven’t scored that many goals, most of them have come from wider areas and midfield areas, like through Robinho and Stevie Ireland of course.

“We’re having a good spread of goals from all areas, but at the moment we are having to score two, possibly three to get our noses in front.

“That’s difficult to sustain so all we need to do is make sure we’re nice and solid and make sure when opportunities are created, which invariably they are when we play, we take them and close games out.”
