The City boss faced the media earlier today ahead of his side's first ever game in the UEFA Cup group stages and when asked about McClaren's return to English soil, he said: "There may be some friendly banter from our fans but Steve has moved on and the England team has moved on.
"We’ve come up against each other at club level in previous clubs. He’s good company and likes to talk about football obviously.
"Steve has always been one, you feel, who always had his career path mapped out. I think there was always going to be a time when he wanted to ply his trade in a different country."
And for McClaren, who's Dutch side could have topped the Eredivisie but for a defeat to Ajax on Saturday, Hughes is keen to add that the former Boro boss should be given credit for taking over at Twente.
"He’s decided to do that and it takes a little bit of courage," he said. "He should be applauded for that because he's made that decision and wants to develop as a coach and as a manager. He is obviously enjoying the experience at the moment because results are going for him.
"It’s pleasing to see that he’s doing well because Twente are a good team and have had decent results over recent weeks."
