Richards looking to carry on derby form

Memories of last season’s memorable derby double are spurring on Micah Richards as we approach Sunday’s lunchtime appointment with the Barclays Premier League champions.

The defender put in a towering performance in August 2007’s 1-0 home win that helped him scoop the first Barclays player of the month award for last season. That was followed by another fine display in our first win at Old Trafford in 34 years last February, something Micah wants to inspire the team on when battle resumes on Sunday.

“It was unbelievable,” he recalls. “Beating them at our place lifted our confidence, and it made us think we could beat anyone on our day. To do the double over them, which had not been done in so long, was a fantastic feeling.

“It was a great honour for the lads, a real achievement. Some teams that do beat United fluke it, but if you look back at both those games we played some good football. We’d like to carry on that form against them on this time around.

“We’ve got more players and some better players than last season, so there’s no reason why we can’t win again.”

Having successfully taken on Arsenal with an attacking game last weekend, Micah wants City to stick to their guns this weekend, as he adds:

“You should not stand off against teams like United, don’t focus on them but concentrate on what your side is doing. In Stephen Ireland, Shaun and Robinho we have players who can create, and we know what to do so we have to go into the game with the attitude of wanting to win, and nothing-else.

"The lads from overseas in the squad may not know about it from the Manchester point of view, but any player wants to play well against United and I am sure we will all do that on Sunday.”
