Robinho fitting in nicely

Robinho has been the centre of attention this week for his display as captain at Hull and his bus journey to the Trafford Centre, and he has got the thumbs-up from his manager on both.

The Brazilian striker was named as skipper in place of the suspended Richard Dunne at the KC Stadium, to the surprise of some, and then newspapers reported that he took public transport on a shopping trip in midweek, to the amazement of fellow passengers.

On the captaincy issue, Hughes told us: "I think he enjoyed it. It maybe took him back somewhat when he was passed it but I think he enjoyed the experience. He enjoyed meeting the referee and having a chat with him beforehand.

“I said after the game at Hull that the reasons were clear to me because I felt that during the Spurs game, under difficult circumstances I thought he came to the fore and led from the front, so that was the thinking behind giving him the armband. I thought he played well again against Hull so it certainly wasn’t detrimental to him that he was wearing the armband.”

As for the by-now famous road trip, Hughes sees it as an example of Robinho’s desire to fit in in Manchester, and he adds:

"I did see that – it shows he’s in touch and is quite prepared to put himself at the mercy of public transport some people would say! Good luck to him and he’s getting to know the town and what better way get to know it than to jump on a local bus.

“I think he’s trying to integrate himself in to the whole of life around Manchester and credit to him. The best way to really get to know the language and the people where you live is to jump in with two feet and immerse yourself in what goes on around here.”
