It was a welcome return to winning ways for Fred Rutten's side after back-to-back Bundesliga defeats and two goals from Halil Altintop and a Jefferson Farfan penalty sealed all three points before half time.
That win saw Schalke move up to seventh in the table, but they remain eight points behind leaders and the surprise package of the Bundesliga season, 1899 Hoffenheim.
