Stevie aiming to stay strong all season

Stephen Ireland wants to make sure that his excellent form carries on right throughout the season.

The midfielder’s brace at the KC Stadium on Sunday brought his goal tally this term to seven, more than doubling his account since his debut just over three years ago.

As well as the goals Stephen has forced some fine saves along the way, and contributed a few assists, all adding up to a start to the season that he recognises is his best yet.

Stephen says, “It’s strange because looking back over the last couple of season you realise what kind of player you were and what player you have become. I often keep asking myself the question ‘have I scored enough, could I have got into the box more?’

“I seem to be getting into the box easier now, and I am more determined than ever this year. I’m wanting to win, wanting to work hard and I know I’m going to get at least one chance in every game. It’s up to me to take the chances, and they have been coming.

“I didn’t take them in a couple of games, but when I’m getting into the area I’m trying to be as clinical as possible. There were a few good saves as well, Gomes made a great one from a volley against Spurs.

“I know what want to do this year, I have set myself a few targets and I’ll need to take my chances when they come.”

The save that Stephen refers came from a volley set up after Benjani had stretched a leg out where other players may not have got into position. Stephen, in turn, says that he is getting to know what his team mates can do more and more.

He continues, “A lot of the other players are on the same wavelength as me, it’s about reading your team mates. Benjani has got good hold-up play, as soon as I give the ball to him I know he is going to hold it so if I can make the ground to get there I can hope he will set me up.”

With nearly a third of the season gone, Stephen is looking to maintain his excellent start with a week of important games looming large.

“I don’t want to fade off during the season, as it develops I want to get stronger and stronger. In the past, I would want a break but now I can’t wait for the next game to come,” he concludes.
