SWP Celebrity Auction Evening – November 20 at CoMS

As well as playing a starring role in the Blues' victory over FC Twente, Shaun Wright-Phillips is preparing for a charity night at the City of Manchester as part of the work he does for underprivileged children in Guatemala.

The foundation is called Education for the Children and was established in 2003 with the aim of the advancing the education of children in Central America through the provision of schools, schools equipment and teaching personnel.

Education for the Children also strives 'to relieve the poverty and sickness of children who are educated by the foundation, together with their families, by the provision of shelter, amenities, facilities and equipment, in any such charitable way as the charity trustees determine.'

The charity has made tremendous progress and there have been some amazing stories through the work they have accomplished since they started including:

  • new schools being built
  • families have been housed and taken away from dangerous living conditions
  • children have benefited from physiological help
  • safe houses have been built and have provided a safe environment for youngsters who were at risk or were facing violence
  • hundreds of children have been taken away from begging on the streets
  • stoves have been provided for families who were facing a short life expectancy due to lung damage from the smoke inhalation from old stoves
  • families have been given medical help and
  • hundreds of children have been sponsored and hundreds more have received an education

Speaking about his support and how it came about, Shaun said: "The night is basically about raising awareness for a group of kids that I look after in Guatemala and I help them through school to get the education and hopefully go on in life to fulfil their dreams really.

"It came about simply by a shirt auction and I wanted to know where the shirt was going rather than just giving things away and not knowing what it’s helping. After watching a documentary about it then one thing just led to another and I just wanted to be more and more involved in it.

"I’ve been involved for two years now and going into my third year. At the end of every year I find myself going over there getting dirty and helping out."

The auction evening is the final event of the year and the charity is hoping to raise enough money to secure a building they were able to negotiate a lease for one year with an option to purchase during 2008. The cost of the building is £150,000 and is perfect for the charity to educate another 250 children.

Tickets for the event, which takes place in the highly acclaimed Boardroom Suite at the City of Manchester Stadium on Thursday November 20, are available now and are priced at £225 plus VAT per person and £2,000 plus VAT for a table of 10.

The format of the evening will be a champagne reception, followed by six-course meal, main auction - conducted by a showbiz personality, live entertainment and disco with celebrity DJ.

Guests at the event will comprise of top business people, celebrities and exclusive VIPs from both London and Manchester.

Shaun added: "Hopefully there’ll be a lot people there along with myself to help support the cause. There’ll be a few people performing as well as an auction and a six-course meal that should be good. It should be a fun night."

Particularly with the vast array of auction prizes up for grabs - they include:

  • a trip to Guatemala – five star hotel + business class travel and visit the charity's school
  • a VIP tour to meet the players at Manchester City
