SWP plays his part as England win in Berlin

Shaun Wright-Phillips impressed for England in their 2-1 win in Berlin on a night where several other City players saw international action.

SWP carried his club form into the international arena, and was unlucky not to get onto the score sheet, rattling the post at the end of one of his trademark jinking runs. Legendary goalkeeper Bert Trautmann was presented to the two teams just before kick off, having a quick word with one of his City successors, David James, shortly after collecting a lifetime achievement award from the German FA.

Elsewhere, Elano & Robinho played as Brazil routed Portugal 6-2 in Brasilia, the former grabbing the fifth goal with an absolute screamer, a shot from outside the side of the area reminiscent of Nelinho’s against Italy in the 1978 World Cup.

Ched Evans played the first hour of Wales’ impressive 1-0 win over Denmark in Copenhagen, while in Dublin Richard Dunne returned to the side after his wife had gone into labour, but the Irish were always behind against Poland and eventually they slipped to 3-2 defeat, the first since Giovanni Trapattoni took over as manager. Ryan McGivern had a night to forget in Belfast as Northern Ireland was despatched 2-0 by Hungary.

Gelson Fernandes played the first 45 minutes of Switzerland’s 1-0 win over Finland, and Nery Castillo was a late substitute in Mexico’s 1-0 defeat to Honduras.
