Vass keen for action against Spurs

Darius Vassell is looking to build upon his encouraging return to action in Sunday’s game against Spurs at the City of Manchester Stadium.

The striker made his first competitive start of 2008/09 in Thursday’s win over FC Twente, a knee injury sustained in the final pre-season warm up against AC Milan seeing him sidelined for the first three months of the campaign.

Reflecting on his time away from the action, Darius says: “It’s been incredibly frustrating, the injury came at the worst possible time and it’s the longest I have been out in all my time at City.

“I wasn’t expecting to start against Twente, but I was chuffed that I did! I thought I got through the game well, and now I’m looking to build on that.

“All I could do was gym work, I had to rest the knee because the minute I start doing anything on it where it could react, that could set me back again. I’ve done everything I was asked to do, and fortunately I’ve come back at the right time. It’s a boost for the Manager to get myself, Benjani and Bally back as well so it’s good he’s got the players to pick from. We’ll have a strong team at the weekend. We’ve got to stop leaking goals, but I think it should be an open game – hopefully only for us!

“It’s been exciting and hard to watch all the good players with all these goals flying in, and not being a part of it was tough. That’s encouraged me to get back as well.”

His next chance to impress could come on Sunday against a Spurs side unbeaten in four games since the surprise arrival of Harry Redknapp at White Hart Lane just two weeks ago. A mouth-watering clash of two attack-minded sides will have extra spice with the likely involvement of Vedran Corluka, and it’s something Darius is keen to be involved in.

He continues, “Results-wise it has been a turn-around for them but it’s the same team, isn’t it? We have to look at that they were not doing well at the start of the season, and put them back down there. It will be nice to link up with Charlie Corluka again, so it should be interesting.”
