The
Brazilian striker’s widely reported (and mostly misinterpreted)
comments last week about wanting the Blues to have a better will to win
have found favour with the left-back, who says he experienced similar
attitudes earlier in his career.
Michael says, “In the squad, we
were fine with it. Robbie has played for one of the best clubs in the
world, and their mentality is that second is nothing. I have had that
when I was with Rangers and with PSV – you could lose the league by
just a point and it’s not good enough.
“That’s the kind of
attitude that you want, it breeds confidence and that’s where we want
City to be. We don’t want second best, we have got to keep pushing up
the league.”
The 29-year-old returned to City’s starting line-up
last weekend after a two month break, winning praise from manager Mark
Hughes and he is now aiming to keep his place, starting with the
Barclays Premier League game against his old team Everton this Saturday.
He
continues, “It has been frustrating one or way or another, I got into
the team and I thought I was doing reasonably well and then got an
injury that set me back a bit. I’ve been back for a while but Javi has
been doing really well at left back. When that happens, it’s a case of
waiting for your chance and grabbing it when it comes.
“I just want to keep my place now, but we need as many wins as possible between now and Christmas.”
