MANCHESTER/BUENOS AIRES, Dec 27: Alfio Basile, former manager of Argentina, is reported from Buenos Aires to be considering an offer to become the next manager of Premier League Manchester City.
Mark Hughes, City’s current manager, has stated publicly only in the past week that he has been told the club’s Abu Dhabi owners have faith in him and in his judgment to spend more of their millions during the January transfer window.
But Basile told an Argentine television sports show that he was currently thinking over offers from “both Manchester and from the United Arab Emirates.” On the assumption that Sir Alex Ferguson is not about to make a shock departure from Manchester United, that leaves the only possibility for Basile of contacts with City bosses at Eastlands.
City are sixth from bottom of the Premier League despite the costly acquisitions at the start of this season of Brazil winger Robinho from Real Madrid and Argentina's Olympic gold-medal-winning right back Pedro Zabaleta from Espanyol Barcelona. Only a 5-1 thrashing of Hull on Friday lifted them up out of the relegation zone.
Basile, a World Club Cup-winner as a player with Racing of Argentina in the 1960s, has since had two spells as national coach. His second ended in October after a run of draws and then a 1-0 defeat by Chile in the current 2010 World Cup qualifiers forced his resignation and subsequent handover to Diego Maradona.
