Blues aim to stay strong at the back

As
he fine-tunes preparations for Saturday’s visit of Everton, Mark Hughes
is hoping that City can continue to keep it tight at the back.

The
Blues have conceded just two goals in the last five games, this despite
a backline that has seen many changes through a recent spate of
injuries or illness.

“We've had some decent performances of
late,” says Mark, “but I've been particularly encouraged by the
defensive performances. We've looked a lot stronger at the back after
highlighting a few things to the players, they have worked on them and
it's come to fruition.

“We always want to maintain the balance of
the team, but we have wanted to stay strong at the back while retaining
our attacking threat. It takes time, but I have seen signs over the
last couple of weeks that our defensive side of our play has improved
markedly.”

This has been a rare week without a game between
Barclays Premier League fixtures, and the Manager is looking forward to
a period without too many midweek fixtures.

“It’s not been very
often. I think we’ve had two or three clear weeks [Monday-Friday]
leading into the weekend. It doesn’t happen very often these days with
European games it just seems like it’s been leading into the a game,
prepare for a game, play it, recover and then you’re back into
preparations very quickly for another game.

“So having a build
up of work in regards to the opposition we’re going to face at on a
weekend has been difficult this season. But hopefully now, with the
European games coming to an end for a number of weeks, after next week
we can then get a body of work into the players that will help them for
the rest of the season.”
