the second part of our major interview with the Club’s Executive
Chairman Garry Cook, he talks about the up and coming transfer window
and spells out that the Blues won’t be held to ransom when it comes to
any January deals.
Recent speculation has seen the Club linked with
numerous players on a daily basis for amounts of money never seen
before in the game but Garry gave us his level headed and
straightforward view on it.
“Well the speculation that you hear
and see is about a player driven process. Like any business we have a
budget driven process.
“We’ve got a very clear plan on what
we’d like to see at the football club in key areas where we think we
can advance the depth of the squad because we have some great players
here already.
“In doing that you have to align where you think
the levels of resources that are required for that. It’s not for me to
divulge those numbers, but it’s fair to say from the supporters’
standpoint, we’re actively looking to build the squad.”
As for
the stories suggesting City will pay ‘silly money’ to clubs and players
Cook stated: “I spoke to Khaldoon [Al Mubarak] on Saturday before the
game and he was particularly concerned at the speculation in the media
regarding the players we are meant to be signing.
“It concerns
him because a lot of that is just pure speculation. He wants to do
business in a pragmatic and sensible way and that’s how we will go into
the window.
“The challenge with regard to price range is what’s
the true value of an individual player and what is the perceived value
and sometimes they don’t meet.
“What we tend to find is that
people think there is limitless funds available for players and they
accordingly put a price tag on individuals. It’s really clear that we
will not be dragged into that type of discussion. They have to be first
and foremost the right character to help move this football club
forward.
“One of the things that are very key is that I won’t
allow this football club to be used by anybody that’s seeking a
fortune. I’d rather just make sure that we’ve got the right characters
who can give the fans value for money.”
Despite the obvious questions of ‘who?’ Garry wouldn’t be drawn on any of the names linked with a move to City.
“It
would be foolish of me to give too much detail but we clearly have
targets and we know the areas which we want to focus on. I think making
any predictions would be unfair to the game and the people in it,” he
said.
“It’s really to meet Mark’s needs and he needs the tools in
which to bring success to the football club. While he’s got a good
portion of them, we’ll look to add to that to help him in key
situations, so we’ll be active.”
And Garry was quick to add that any players joining the Blues in January will be on the say so of Mark Hughes.
“The
Manager really makes the calls on who he’d like to see at the football
club to add to the strength of what we already have.
“We’ve
certainly changed the way we go about looking at players and the squad.
That’s down to Mark and we’ve been working on this for 60 days now.
“Mark
has a clear plan on what he’s looking for and it’s more built around
the character that’s required and the type of players in the team.
“Where
they come from is not the most important part, it’s things like are
they the right type of player, do they have the relevant experience,
can they adjust to the Premier League? They have to tick all the boxes
and that’s what Mark talks to me about.
“There’ll be some
surprises but at the same time we should also expect that during the
window if we have players or clubs who think this is a gravy train then
we’d be quite willing to walk away.”
Regardless of whether Garry
would have to ‘walk away’ from any deals he doesn’t see that as an
obstacle to turning the Club around and he had no qualms about sharing
his thoughts on where he sees Manchester City in 10 years time.
He declared: “I know that this Club will be one of the biggest clubs in the world. I don’t have any doubt about that.
“We’re
going to step through some challenges but ultimately everybody in this
football club, including the owners, believes that the vision for the
next 10 years is the most important part.
“Worrying about a
result over the last two weeks is, while it’s disheartening and not to
plan, it’s not the thing that we are going to live or die by.”
