satisfied Mark Hughes has given us his reaction after City’s late late
show earned themselves a point at Ewood Park this afternoon.
The
Blues were 2-0 down after 87 minutes but inspired by substitute Daniel
Sturridge City hit back with two late strikes and leave with a draw.
Afterwards Hughes said: “The guys showed great character and courage and I was really pleased for them.
“I
don’t think we deserved to be 2-0 down obviously we had chances in the
first half, Robinho’s header and a nailed on penalty spring to mind.
But when you concede just before half time you look back on those
situations that haven’t gone for you and think it’s not going to be
your day.
“We had to keep going and I thought we were better in
the second half. We made changes and that helped our momentum but they
looked to protect their lead. Then we got done with the sucker punch
for the second goal, which was really hard to take, but we kept going.”
And
with City’s fans in the packed Darwen End urging the team forward they
promptly responded as Sturridge crashed in a sweet volley inside the
box before setting up Robinho to bag the leveller in the third minute
of injury time.
“Daniel Sturridge came on and made a real impact, scored a goal and picked out Robinho and the far post,” Hughes continued.
“Robinho
might have had a quiet game today but the reason you keep him on the
field of play is because you know he has the ability to change the game
in a second and that’s what he did.
“We struggled to play our
normal game today. We were excellent against Hull, everybody saw the
manner of that victory, but coming to play Blackburn at Ewood Park is a
different type of game.
“I know on occasions we haven’t quite
got the type of player to change things around as we need to. In the
future we hope to have that flexibility in selection but today it was
about digging in and getting our good players on the ball.
“We
found it difficult to get a foothold in the game but towards the end of
the game we got it down and asked some questions of the opposition and
thankfully we found the answers.”
