Danny happy with starting position

Danny
Sturridge sees his current run in the side away from his normal
out-and-out striker’s position will help in his development.

The
20-year-old has turned in some eye-catching displays out on the left
flank in our recent UEFA Cup fixtures, setting up Benjani for the
opener against Schalke last week and earning praise from Mark Hughes
for his all-round work.

Twice on target this season, most
recently from the penalty spot at the end of our win over Arsenal,
Danny accepts the need to play out of position for the team, but he’s
keen to throw down a marker for a place up front.

Danny tells us,
“It’s a good experience for me playing in these kinds of games, and
playing out in the left, not in my normal position, is a good education
for me.

“I’m a striker and that’s the position I see myself in in
the future, but if I have to play out of position to get into the team
then I will do that, although my main aim would always be to play as a
striker.

“When you have played in a position for so long, like I
have, it’s hard to change and learn to play somewhere new in the space
of a month or a few weeks. You’re getting judged in front of 40,000
people so I have got to do my best out there.

“There are a lot of
injuries at the moment, Robinho was injured before the Schalke game as
well. That’s where I’m getting my opportunity from, so if there are
more injuries I’ll get more chances but if not I’ll have to work hard
to get in the starting eleven. There are a lot of good players here,
it’s good competition and I’d like to be in in my position as a
striker. But I want to be on the pitch, I want to play, no-one wants to
be on the bench, as long as I am playing I’m happy.”

Despite the changes in position and personnel, Danny thinks City are still taking the attacking approach whatever the opponents.

“I
think as a team we are still playing in the same style, we try to play
attacking football and we work hard to break teams down to allow us to
do our attacking stuff.”
