Hughes has reflected on this afternoon’s 1-0 defeat to Everton after
David Moyes’ men left SportCity with all three points in a classic
smash and grab raid.
Without a striker on the pitch, Everton’s main
threat was always going to come from a set piece, and so it proved as
Tim Cahill popped up with a 90th minute headed winner.
Afterwards
Hughes said: “It’s disappointing to lose the game and for Everton to
win in the manner that they did. We have to be more resolute and make
sure we get our job done.
“Unfortunately we switched off and Cahill, who’s always a danger in the box and from set plays, has won the game for them.
“I
don’t really feel that either team did enough in the game to warrant
three points. Everton will look at their performance and think it’s a
good away performance.
“You have to agree with that because they got people behind the ball, made it difficult and closed down the space.
“We
needed to show a bit more guile, craft and a little bit more
personality on occasions to retain possession and ask more questions.
“It’s difficult because Everton have done that to many teams in the past and will do it again in the future.
“It’s
disappointing because of the timing of the goal because there’s
absolutely no chance to get back into the game at that point.”
