Hughes playing the numbers game

Mark Hughes has given his reaction to the raft of players currently linked with January moves to the City of Manchester Stadium.

When
told by the media in yesterday's pre Everton press conference the
Manager had said he wanted 'five or six' players in during the winter
window, the boss declared: "I get many quotes attributed to me, so the
ones I actually say and the ones that are reported get mixed up on
occasion.

"We are looking to strengthen and that’s well
documented. We want to improve the quality that we already have at the
Club and January gives us that opportunity to hopefully go into the
market and acquire good players that will help us."

Strikers
Sergio Aguero and Craig Bellamy were two more names thrown up by the
media in the gossip columns and of those Hughes remarked: “Number 49
and number 50 on your list I think!

“The list keeps on growing
and maybe it will be bigger before we can actually go into the market
and acquire some of the ones that are on the list. The only thing I can
assure you is that we won’t be buying them all!"

With City the
focus of much of the papers’ printing ink this week, the Manager added
his thoughts to that of Mark Bowen, who referred to ‘blatant lies’
reported in the press in recent times.

Hughes said: “We’ve had a
number of stories that aren’t really based on any truth and some of
them are rather silly in fairness.

“The thought of Sheikh
Mansour and Chairman Khaldoon sitting in a room doing tactics and
sending them over by fax is a little bit ridiculous so we take it with
a pinch of salt.

“A number of these statements and stories seem to come out without any base so we don’t really place much value on them.

“They
seem to be coming from London based papers and London based editors so
maybe they’ve had some quiet days in the office and they’ve had to come
up with some stories and invariably they seem to involve us but there
you go.”
