Is this a harsh reality that Manchester City will initially have to face?

Football FanCast columnist Rob Facey wonders how much truth there is in Fernando Torres' comments; are big players only considering playing for Man City for the money?

Fernando Torres has claimed that the big players linked with Man City would only move to Eastlands for the money.

Torres' Spanish team-mate Iker Casillas is the latest name linked with City, but the Liverpool striker has dismissed the notion of the Madrid keeper moving to the Premier League.

"Big players like Iker are looking for more than what City can offer," Torres said, as reported in The Sun.

"However much they offer, you're putting money ahead of the sporting aspect. Players like Iker will always be at the best clubs in the world. And in this case City is not one of them today.

"These are the offers this team has to make because otherwise nobody will want to go there. They need to make another huge signing like Robinho.

"When players see other great players go there they become attractive.

"The same thing happened with Chelsea. First they had to make a team of great players but without great names."

Is this a harsh reality that City will have to live with? How do fans feel about their club being used as a way to get money in the bank?

Is Robinho a good example of this? He was minutes away from joining Chelsea until Man City came in with a more attractive financial package and the Brazilian was dramatically unveiled as a City player. Is this what the future holds, the hijacking of transfers with a slightly improved offer?

Or, do Torres' comments indicate that these other clubs jealous?

It would be understandable if it was the clubs below City that are worried about how they will ‘steal' their potential players, but the fact that clubs like Liverpool and Aston Villa commenting on City's situation must mean that there is a genuine fear that Mark Hughes' side can gatecrash the Big Four.
