Portsmouth confirmed this week that Real Madrid had lodged an impressive bid for Lassana Diarra, who has taken Europe by storm since leaving Arsenal last January.
The Spanish giants are thought to have offered around €26 million for the former Chelsea midfielder who was so important in Pompey's FA Cup triumph under Harry Redknapp.
Manchester City were, up until very recently, the favourites to sign the 23-year-old, and it is thought they are willing to eclipse any offer Los Blancos might make.
And now Eastlands boss Mark Hughes, an open admirer of the Frenchman, has hinted that he will not concede defeat until pen hits paper.
"Diarra is a player I like. He’s a good player but, at the moment, he’s still a Portsmouth one," Hughes said in The Sun.
"Things may develop for him. But the window isn’t open at this moment so we’ll just wait and see what happens. You can make of that what you want."
Should Diarra move to the Bernabeu, City might instead focus their attention on Inter Milan's Esteban Cambiasso, with whom they have been repeatedly linked.
