Philipp Lahm is on Manchester City's list of transfer targets for January, according to reports in The Manchester Evening News.
The Bayen Munich left-back, currently rated as perhaps the best player in that position in the world despite being right-footed, will be City boss Mark Hughes's stand-by choice should he fail to prise Wayne Bridge away from Chelsea.
Lahm has won 52 caps for Germany and was named in the all-star team following the 2006 World Cup in his native land. He is also currently in the UEFA team of the year.
Associated with Bayern since the age of 11, a period of time interrupted only briefly by a spell on loan at VFB Stuttgart at the beginning of his career, it may take significant amounts of cash to persuade Lahm to leave a club where he is so well established.
However, City have the financial power to do just that, and such a signing would be an indicator of just how serious Mark Hughes is about turning City into a true European powerhouse.
Lahm joins a list that reportedly includes the previously mentioned Wayne Bridge, Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal’s Kolo Toure, West Ham United’s Craig Bellamy and Joleon Lescott from Everton. City are also looking at goalkeepers, with Shay Given from Newcastle United being touted as a possibility.
Just how many of those players would be prepared to join a club currently facing a relegation battle remains to be seen.
