Manchester City's New Sponsor: United!

Having recently confirmed that they will be ending their partnership with current shirt sponsors Thomas Cook, Manchester City are now on the verge of closing a deal with UAE airline Etihad.

While this may seem all well and good, it will prove a thorn in the side of every City fan, who will be taunted by bitter local rivals Manchester United, as the word 'etihad' literally translates from Arabic to English as 'union' or, if you will, 'united'.

The deal itself is said to be predictably lucrative, even bigger than that of the one AIG have with United, worth £56.5 million.

Etihad is the official airline of Britain's other mega-money club, Chelsea, and also sponsor Rugby side Harlequins. The obvious connection between the Abu Dhabi United Group's takeover of Man City and this forthcoming lucrative sponsorship deal means that they're going from rich to richer at Eastlands, but would fans has settled for a less lucrative deal with a company not linked, however tenuously, with their bitter rivals?
