After securing the services of Shaun Wright-Phillips at the end of the summer, and out-bidding them for the services of Robinho, Manchester City are set to tangle in the transfer market with Chelsea once again.
The Manchester Evening News reports that City manager Mark Hughes has targetted Chelsea's second-choice left-back Wayne Bridge as the idela man to reinforce the Citizens' defence, and he is prepared to test the theory that the West London club must sell before they can afford to buy.
City would be prepared to pay the likely £8 million asking price, but there are other complications to take into account. Firstly, relationships between the two clubs may well be a little strained after the summer's transfer activity, and Chelsea may be reluctant to deal with City again so soon.
Secondly, Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari may not feel that he has adequate cover for Ashley Cole should Bridge leave, and may want to keep him at the club as a result.
Bridge has over 250 top-flight appearances to his name, as well as 32 England caps, and would represent a quality choice for City. The move might well appeal to Bridge as well, as he struggles to dislodge Cole not only from his berth as Chelsea's left-back, but also England's.
