It was reported earlier in the week that Michael Johnson could be up for sale in January having fallen out of favour at Manchester City this season.
The 20-year-old midfielder was labelled 'the new Steven Gerrard' when he broke into the first team at Eastlands two years ago, but now his place at the club appears to be in jeopardy.
The England Under-21 star is currently laid up with an abdominal problem, and there are strong suspicions that he has been spending the majority of his recovery period in the bars and clubs of Manchester's city centre.
Sky Blues manager Mark Hughes is thought to be unimpressed by Johnson's supposed lack of professionalism, hence his interest in signing the likes of Lassana Diarra and Esteban Cambiasso.
And Sparky's right-hand man, Mark Bowen, has admitted that the youngster is struggling to deal with the mental challenges that come with any extended stretch on the sidelines.
“When young players have been in and out of action as long as he has it can mess your mind up a little bit because they just want to be out there playing,” Bowen told the Daily Mail.
However, with Brazilian star Elano becoming increasingly unsettled at City it is unlikely the club will sell Johnson, who has four years remaining on his contract, during the winter.
