Newcastle: We Can't Prevent Owen Joining Manchester City

Newcastle United chairman Mike Ashley has admitted that the club would be powerless to prevent captain Michael Owen from joining Manchester City if he was offered terms from Eastlands, such is the strain on the Toon's resources at this moment in time.

This week the 29-year-old forward was reportedly offered a contract by the Magpies worth £25,000-per-week less than his first deal at St James' Park, which was signed in 2005.

As such, the club have been left hanging as their skipper contemplates the offer in front of him. Owen has not rejected the deal outright, which is encouraging from a Newcastle point of view.

However, club owner Ashley has conceded that his outfit do not have the financial clout to compete with nouveau-riche Manchester City, who could sweep his captain away in an instant with a lucrative deal.

He told The Sun: "We'd love Michael Owen to stay.

"Newcastle want him to stay but we have to look at what we can spend when other clubs like Man City do not.

"The guy at City is about 1,000 times wealthier than me. I haven't got his kind of money.

"If Man City want Owen, there's nothing I can do about it."
