While the Mancunians have faltered in the Premier League this term, their contrasting form in Europe has added credence to the belief that they could be serious contenders for the Uefa trophy.
Despite their midweek loss to Racing Santander, Mark Hughes' side progressed from Group A in top-spot, ensuring they avoid the Champions League teams in the next stage.
That fact did not go unnoticed by England international Richards who is relishing the next stage of the competition.
"I've said all along that we're in it to win it, and we've played some difficult sides already and beaten them," Richards told Goal.com in conjunction with MicahRichards.com.
"The league is as important for us as the Uefa Cup, but we seem to have had more success in Europe than we have in the Premier League.
"However, I know we'll improve as we find our form, make a few new signings to boost the squad, and move up the Premier League."
