will be without Richard Dunne for Thursday’s UEFA Cup tie against Real
Racing Club after the skipper’s wife gave birth to a baby boy on
Wednesday morning.
Danny Sturridge’s Achilles problem prevents him
from travelling to Santander with the squad for the final Group A game,
while illness means that fellow striker Jo does not make the trip to
northern Spain.
Otherwise, it’s a full strength squad for the
fixture, and speaking to us at Manchester Airport just before the squad
departed, Mark Hughes said:
“Richard’s wife has had a baby, and
we send our congratulations to them. I think they thought the baby
would have come along a bit sooner, but it’s important that he’s with
his wife and family now.
“We’re going to pick a team to win the
game, but given that we have already qualified it is important that we
take into account the period that we are going into.
“It’s a big
demand of players, a lot of our shining lights have played virtually
all the games this season, so this could be a chance to give a few of
them a bit of a rest and respite, then they are fit & well for the
weekend.
“Jo has not travelled because he is ill, and there a
few other niggles as well. It’ll be late in the day before I finalise
the team. We’re being mindful of the workload that the players have
been through, so if I can help that situation with one eye on the
weekend, then I will.”
