South Africa: Benji Notches First for Man City

Former Jomo Cosmos' Zimbabwean striker Benjani Mwaruwari scored his first league goal of the season for 'super rich' English Premiership side Manchester City at the weekend in the 1-1 away draw with Fulham and again put on his famous celebration.

The former Jomo Cosmos striker sent City into the lead early in the match heading home from a cross by Pablo Zabaleta.

In his typical aggressive mood Mwaruwari leapt highest between two Fulham defenders directing his header to the far corner for his first league goal prompting the 'raise your hand' celebration that he has become famous for along with former Portsmouth team mate Nwanko Kanu.

"That celebration started with 'Bigman' (Kanu) whom I used to share a room with at Portsmouth. We were watching a movie where there was a guy who wins and had to say a speech after getting his prize. But apparently he couldn't express his feelings in English as he was Spaniard and he just stood on the podium and pointed to the crowd as a way of saying I love you all.

"'Bigman immediately said if I score then I should do that, which is why I have adopted that kind of celebration," Mwaruwari recently told KickOff.com.

Continually a threat upfront for City, Mwaruwari almost won the game for his side but was unfortunate to see his strike from the edge of the box go just wide.

The 30 year-old has featured prominently for City since completing his recovery just over a month ago and already also boasts two goals in the Uefa Cup where he has scored against German side Schalke and Dutch club FC Twente.

Since returning from that injury Mwaruwari has been the preferred choice upfront for Mark Hughes starting all four league games that have been played since he made his first start against Tottenham
