The boss cools the latest transfer talk, while there are rumours of Jo heading back to Moscow. The Independent"No spending spree for City, says Hughes"Mark
Hughes hinted yesterday that Manchester City may have to wait until the
summer for the kind of marquee signings which have been anticipated for
the club. "January is a difficult window to negotiate for top players
as a lot of them are involved with Champions League striving to win
titles and competition," Hughes said. "To extract them from top clubs
is going to be very difficult because those clubs don't want to deal
with you."City have gone to great lengths this week to dampen
anticipation about their plans and Hughes' comments may be a part of
that drive. But securing some of the names which have been mentioned,
from Gianluigi Buffon to Lionel Messi in mid-season looks a tall order,
even with City's millions.Hughes said that Martin O'Neill's
suggestion that City's January spending might "explode the market"
reflected a "fear" on the Aston Villa manager's part that City will "be
in the same market as the players they're going for." Villa, as well as
City, have been interested in Blackburn's Roque Santa Cruz (right).Though
City are looking beyond the Premier League, Hughes said that players
with domestic experience – Portsmouth's Lassana Diarra and Arsenal's
Kolo Touré have been in his sights – can bring something extra. "The
key is that people calm down a bit," Hughes said. "There are a lot of
players out there who people are getting very excited about but maybe
not in the positions we are looking to strengthen. We need a bit of
realism."Daily Mail"CSKA open door for Manchester City striker Jo to return on loan"Manchester
City's Brazilian striker Jo could be heading back on loan to CSKA
Moscow, who sold him to City in the summer for £18million.The Russian club promise they will build up the frail 21-year-old's physique in return for his services.CSKA's
Vagner Love is likely to move in the transfer window, with Chelsea
heavily linked to the Brazil striker, which means the Russian side will
need a replacement.CSKA believe Jo, who has scored just one
Premier League goal and now cannot make the starting lineup at City,
could be tempted back.A source close to the Moscow club said:
There's a strong possibility we'll get Jo on loan. He needs more
first-team football, but he's unlikely to be getting it in England.'It's
going to take another year to build up his physical condition to the
standards needed there, although he's fine for Russian football.'The only real obstacle is the very high salary Jo is getting at City.'City
boss Mark Hughes has answered criticism of the club's proposed
multi-million pound January spending spree by insisting the cash will
help their rivals. There are fears rivals will not be able to compete with City's spending power, but Hughes said: 'Other clubs shouldn't worry.'Whatever
we do may inadvertently help them because we may well stimulate the
market, and that will enable clubs to go into the market themselves.Maybe
there is a fear we'll be in the market for the same type of players.
But if we go into the market then the merry-go-round starts to spin
again.'
