Pre match
Manchester
City's defence of the FA Youth Cup begins with seven of the successful
squad from last season on the pitch as Swansea's Liberty Stadium hosts
its first ever Youth Cup tie.
The match
Swansea
looked to impose their physically bigger side on the Blues early on as
a deep free-kick was hoisted into the box only for Casey Thomas' header
to land on the top of the net.
It didn't take long for City to get into their stride and within seven minutes four chances came and went.
First
on 10 minutes, right back Kieran Trippier fashioned a hooked shot, with
his left foot that narrowly dropped wide of the young Swans’ goal.
Two
minutes later Robbie Mak fired past the same post after a dangerous run
from the rapid Slovak. Then on 17 minutes Alex Nimely’s shot from close
range was saved and Mak’s follow-up was scrambled behind for a corner.
But Mak
wasn't to be kept off the scoresheet for too much longer as on 29
minutes he latched on to Nimely's ball over the top before powerfully
driving the ball home from about 10-yards.
Unbelievably it was the young side's 50th goal of the season in just their 14th outing of the campaign.
Mak
could have made it 51 goals and number 11 for himself this season just
a minute before the break but Rhys Wilson turned over the explosive
effort for yet another City corner.
HALF TIME: Swansea 0-1 City
A
slow start to the second half eventually saw City create a great chance
on 57 minutes as Nimely slid a fine ball inside the right channel for
Ahmad Benali who could only fire the ball into Wilson's body from just
inside the box.
Then a minute later Alex Nimely
grabbed the goal his performance deserved with a neat side foot finish
from six-yards out after Chris Chantler's pinpoint left wing cross.
The
Blues could and should have had a penalty on 75 minutes as substitute
Sheehan clearly appeared to take Chantler down in the area, but as
everyone expected the whistle, referee Newell didn't oblige.
City were comfortable all night and they made it 3-0 on 87 minutes, as Nimely scored his second of the night, touching home Boyata's header back across goal from Trippier's free-kick.
FULL TIME: Swansea 0-3 City
