Wayne Bridge is ready to make his Manchester City debut this weekend, and he is already eyeing a bright future ahead for the Club.
The England international has been expanding upon his reasons for making the move to the Blues from Chelsea, but first and foremost, bearing in mind his lack of regular chances at Stamford Bridge, is he fit for Fratton Park?
"I’m fit," he declares, "I train hard and after a few games I’ll be even fitter. I train hard and I’d like to think I can play 90 minutes whenever the boss wants me to play."
28-year-old Wayne moved to Chelsea in summer 2003 at a time when the West London club was embarking upon an exciting expansion phase, and he sees similarities with his new club.
"I hope we can challenge the top teams, that’s why I am here! The Manager has spoken to me about the players he wants to bring in, the training here and the way he wants the club to go. Everything he said was positive.
"It’s not going to be a rapid progression, but it’s one that is going to happen over a course of time. Speaking to the gaffer and people here it’s an exciting time, and I am happy to be here at the start of it."
Player and manager were team mates in the late 1990s at Southampton, and Wayne says that that was a reason for his decision to move north.
"There were a lot of reasons for coming here, and the boss is one of them," he explains. "I know him from playing with him at Southampton. After speaking to him, when he was so positive, it was not a hard decision to make."
And the Manager has also expressed his pleasure at seeing Wayne's transfer go through, adding:
"Wayne is one of the top left-backs not only in this country, but in Europe as well. I’ve watched his progress from the time we played alongside each other, seen him become a very successful Premier League and international player.
"He has the right quality, he has the determination and the drive to show people exactly what he can do on a regular basis. That’s the type of player we need here, he is an undoubted talent and has proved that over many seasons in the Premier League. We are fortunate to be able to bring him here."
