just the one match in the Manchester City shirt, Craig Bellamy is
already bubbling with enthusiasm at the potential he sees in the team.
The
striker, who made his move to the Blues from West Ham last week, made
the perfect start by scoring on debut, but he's been generous in his
praise of his new team mates.
In particular he was keen to talk
about the three players immediately behind him on Wednesday night,
Robinho, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Stephen Ireland.
Craig says,
"They are very intelligent & clever players. Robinho speaks for
himself, but this season Stephen Ireland this season has been
incredible. He has been exceptional from the start, his energy, touch,
vision and all-round game have impressed me immensely.
"Some of
the lads at West Ham have called to ask me about Robinho, and I have
not trained with him as much as I would have liked, but Stephen Ireland
has been outstanding. Against Newcastle there was one ball where he was
giving it to me, gave the defender the eye and nearly went into
Robinho. He's an intelligent player and will be a pleasure to play with.
"You
should always watch other players, everyone admires good players and
Stephen is at the top of his game. I am not just saying it alone, but a
lot of other players are admiring him from afar. Robinho is just a
talent, and Shaun has great energy as well as working hard for the
team."
The 29-year-old's willingness to track back and chase lost
causes won him plaudits from the home fans on Wednesday, and it's what
happens without the ball that is just as important to Craig as when he
is on it.
"When you have not got the ball, you have to work hard
- there is no other way in this league. With our talents, we can hurt
teams - but you can only do that when you have got the ball.
"City
has won the odd game, then lost one or two, then pulled it out of the
bag. This is going to have to change, this club has to become
consistent and start really working hard. The ground-level work has to
start somewhere and we have to make it count.
"The best teams are
not just great with the ball, they are brilliant when they have not got
it. They close down and win it back straight away, and that is what we
have to start learning. When the top players do come into the team, it
won't be a shock for them."
Next up for City is the trip to the
Britannia Stadium on Saturday, and the Welsh international knows what
City have to do to overcome tricky opponents.
"Stoke is going
to be very difficult, but I have watched City a lot and away from home
players will get tight to someone like Robinho. If the full back goes
tight to him, hopefully I can get in behind so he could have a lot of
space. That would benefit us away from home."
